Keene Mill students performed beautifully at the school concert on Tuesday.  Thanks to the Keene Mill band, strings and chorus teachers for their dedication to music education.

SOL Testing

SOL testing begins on Monday, May 13.  The SOL assessments measure the extent to which students have learned the content and skills reflected in state standards and may also be used to measure growth in learning state standards.  Please help your student do his/her best on their SOL tests by getting a good night sleep before the test and a healthy breakfast.  Talk to them about putting forth their best effort while not becoming overly stressed.

🖍️ It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Attending kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives. Eligible children can also be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps us plan, so that we have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

FCPS students in grades 3-12 took the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener during March, providing updated information on skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available for families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

Get more information about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact our counselors Mrs. Ashurst or Mrs. Yost.

Boosterthon Information

The schedule for the Fun Run tomorrow is:

👟9:30AM - 5th & 6th

👟1:25PM - 3rd & 4th

👟2:45PM - K, 1st, and 2nd

Keene Mill families are encouraged to come to the field behind the school during their student(s) run time and cheer on our Kangas.

All students should wear comfortable clothing and sneakers for running and bring a water bottle with their name on it.  Students may also want to bring a hat.  Please apply sunscreen at home, if desired.   It should be a great cool day for a run with temps around 65 degrees and cloud cover.

From the Keene Mill PTA board:

One of our favorite things about springtime at Keene Mill are the weeks of the Helping Games and Booster. It is a time that our Kangas come together to see the impact they can have giving back to their community, followed by our Keene Mill community coming together to support our amazing students.

It takes involvement from everyone – families, friends, students, teachers, staff, local businesses – to make all these weeks a success. And we continuously reach our goals because of the care and commitment we all have for our Keene Mill community.

We are getting close to reaching our 2024 Booster goal of $28,500 and we are beyond grateful to everyone who has contributed to our fundraiser. You are directly impacting our 2024-25 school year by helping to provide science and author assemblies, classroom improvements, courtyard garden upgrades, PTA events, and more. Head over to mybooster.com to register, share, and donate.

Along with supporting Keene Mill education and school initiatives, the PTA had the opportunity to do some exciting and innovative things with our Booster funds from last year. One of our final programs we have planned is a school-wide reading initiative for each of our Kangas as they head into summer break. And it is all thanks to Booster contributions.

As we near the end of our Booster fundraising campaign, the excitement is building for our Fun Run on Friday!

We’ll see you there!

Support Your Keene Mill Community

Last Thursday, Keene Mill and its Parent-Teacher Association kicked off its annual Booster fundraiser. This is our only school fundraiser for the year -- no selling items, no distributing orders, just an easy online sponsorship for students for our Fun Run on April 19.

This year's PTA has made sure to spend last year's Booster funds on things that directly impact all Keene Mill students, teachers, and staff. We have used it for busses for field trips for every grade, three assemblies with Mad Science DC, and arranged for each grade to have its own session with illustrator/author Ralph Masiello. We have worked on school and classroom improvements such as the hallway mural, outdoor sensory path area, new rugs, and increased enrichment reimbursements for classroom supplies. We have shown our appreciation to our amazing teachers and staff with quarterly hospitality events.

We have also used the funds to encourage community development through our evening events like International Night, Costume Bingo, and Family Science Night, as well as hosting informational speakers at our PTA meetings.

All of these things we could not do without the support of YOU! Our Keene Mill community continuously steps up, and we hope you will again during this Booster fundraising drive. We take pride in the fact that our school community is so supportive of our endeavors, and we want you to know we truly appreciate it and do not take it for granted.

Thank you for your support of Keene Mill Elementary, our PTA, and the greater KMES community.

Sincerely, Courtney Marsh, Keene Mill PTA president

Keene Mill Happenings

Students and staff were busy at Keene Mill this week.  On Thursday, students participated in Chalk for Kindness to culminate the Helping Games!  Congratulations to the yellow team for coming out on top!  On Friday, Ms. Peace and Mrs. Colter met with our military connected students to allow them to form connections and share experiences.

Lockdown Notification

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for all of us. We have a crisis management and emergency preparedness plan for our school that is reviewed and updated regularly. Our plan includes procedures on how to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Students and staff regularly practice these drills every school year. We also practice lockdown drills.

A new Virginia Law (22.1-137.2) requires schools to notify parents at least 24 hours before a school practices a lockdown drill. However, we are not required to share the exact date and time of the drill. We are required to practice lockdown drills two times a year. FCPS lockdown drills do not include any type of active shooter scenario training, they are instruction and classroom based.

We will conduct a lockdown drill at our school soon.

Additional information on our lockdown drill program to include parent tips and FAQs can be found on the Emergency Planning and Crisis Response web page. After reviewing this content, you should discuss the value of these safety drills with your child.

Keeping our school safe and secure for all students and staff involves the participation of the entire school community, and we thank you for your help to keep our school safe.

PTA News IT'S BOOSTERTHON TIME!

The 2024 Kanga Boosterthon started on Thursday! All are invited to attend the Fun Run on Friday, April 19, and cheer on their student(s) as they run, walk, and have a great time during the high-energy, music-packed celebration on the field behind Keene Mill.

REGISTER and SHARE NOW at http://mybooster.com

Last year’s Boosterthon funds have been put to use throughout the school: new classroom rugs, a hallway mural, a sensory walk on the blacktop, day-long author visit from Ralph Masiello, three assemblies with Mad Science DC, courtyard garden upgrades, Family Science Night, and much more. Your donations make a direct impact on our Keene Mill students and we thank you for your support!

Dear Parents,

We're excited to inform you that approved glasses have been secured for all students, ensuring a safe viewing experience during the upcoming solar eclipse.  Our school recognizes the educational value of the celestial event and will be offering classes the option to participate in observing the eclipse.

Please rest assured that safety remains our top priority.  If you have a concern or question regarding your child's participation, please reach out to your child's teacher.  This is an optional activity.

Thank you for your continued support as we provide enriching educational experiences for our students.

Best regards

Linda Peace

Principal

Solar Eclipse on April 8, 2024

It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon and one that requires important safety reminders. Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes.

Here's what you need to know:

Eclipse timing: The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m. (which coincides with dismissal for some students), and ends around 4:32 p.m. Please remind your child to be especially vigilant about eye safety during dismissal. If you have concerns about your child walking or riding the bus home, please arrange for alternative transportation.

Month of the Military Child

Throughout the month of April, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) will be honoring the invaluable contributions of military-connected youth with the Month of the Military Child and Purple Up! Day.

FCPS would like to express its gratitude to these unsung heroes. With approximately 14,000 military-connected students, FCPS recognizes the extraordinary strength military-connected students possess in order to navigate the military lifestyle. The resilience and courage of our military-connected youth does not go unnoticed, and their commitment to supporting their service member parents and guardians deserves the utmost admiration and respect.

As part of this month-long recognition, Keene Mill will celebrate Purple Up! on April 12, 2024.  Schools and community members are encouraged to wear purple as a visible gesture of their appreciation and support for military-connected youth. In addition to Purple Up! Day, FCPS school communities are coming together to honor their military-connected students in meaningful and creative ways.

To connect with more FCPS resources, please email [email protected].

Kiss & Ride

Please remember that morning Kiss & Ride closes promptly at 9:15 am.  The teachers and patrols who supervise Kiss & Ride need to be in class at 9:15 am.  If you drive up to Kiss & Ride and the doors are closed, you must bring your child to the front office to check in and receive a tardy pass.

Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) School Health Services Internal Survey

The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) employs school health aides and public health nurses who provide school health services to the students in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). To determine the quality of these services, a survey has been developed by the FCHD to be shared with all parents or guardians of FCPS students. Parents/guardians will be asked for feedback on the level of satisfaction with School Health services provided to the school community. The survey will be distributed electronically via FCPS This Week. The survey window is April 15 - April 26, 2024. Survey link: www.redcap.link/FCHDSchoolHealthSurvey.

Survey results will provide a basis for quality improvement of School Health services. The data-driven process is in alignment with the FCPS Strategic planning process, and the survey results will contribute positively to the FCPS Strategic Plan that reflects a shared consensus among stakeholders.

Keene Mill Families,

We had a wonderful and busy week here at school! Our library hosted our annual book fair, and our students were excited to peruse and purchase books. Thank you to our wonderful PTA and all the parent volunteers for helping with  the book fair and spring pictures!

The Helping Games finished the third week, and students donated their coins to Pennies for Patients.  Students also continued to bring in photos of helping in the community.

Third grade went on a field trip to the Natural History Museum today.  Next week first grade and sixth grade will go on field trips.

Third quarter will end next Friday and Spring Break will begin Monday, March 25th. Students will return for the start of the 4th quarter on Wednesday, April 3rd. We hope that everyone has a wonderful weekend!

Helping Games started today!!  Ask your student about the Helping Games assembly they attended with Mr. Lachance and Mrs. Ehlers.  Bring canned food to donate next week.

Arrival and Dismissal Safety

We continue to get reports of unsafe driving and stopping on Bardu Avenue during arrival and dismissal. Parents are dropping students off on Bardu Avenue and allowing them to cross the street with cars and buses blocking visibility.  U-Turns on Bardu Ave. are both illegal and very, very dangerous.  The safety of our school community is compromised every time someone does this. • Community partnerships

The survey will be available in English, Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Pashto, Spanish, Urdu, and Vietnamese.

Share Your Thoughts on Schoology

FCPS will be conducting voluntary, anonymous surveys on the use of Schoology from Monday, March 11, to Friday, March 22. Surveys will be delivered to:

  • Elementary students (grades 3-6) through the Schoology App Center.
  • Secondary students via email from Naviance.

Student feedback will inform the school division’s use of Schoology and help improve its processes, communication, and professional learning for staff. FCPS’ Instructional Services Department will also be reaching out to families through focus groups.

Keene Mill and the PTA are pleased to welcome children’s book illustrator Ralph Masiello, who will be speaking to each grade on March 20. He will discuss his job as an illustrator, draw pictures, and explain his creative process to the kids with grade-appropriate content.

Along with illustrating books of other authors, Mr. Masiello has created a series of Learn-to-Draw books. We are offering a pre-sale selection of his books through the “Forms and Payments” section on our PTA website: keenemillpta.ptboard.com. An order form was also in each student’s Thursday folder last week. For all orders submitted, Mr. Masiello will sign and personalize each book!

ORDERS MUST BE RECEIVED BY FRIDAY, MARCH 1.

WATCH D.O.G.S. PROGRAM STARTING AT KEENE MILL

This spring, in partnership with the PTA, Keene Mill launched the nationally recognized Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students) program. This is an opportunity for dads and father-figures in our student’s lives to volunteer their time during school hours. Please email [email protected] if you would like to sign up or receive more information.

As a reminder, for the remainder of this school year, our focus is to have Watch D.O.G.S. at lunch and recess periods (generally, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM). During this time, you will be able to eat lunch with your student and help maintain a safe environment during recess.

We still have many openings, so feel free to send an email listing any days that you would like to volunteer in the school. We can also have more than one Watch D.O.G.S. member helping in the school at a time, so there will not be a time when a date is already taken.

The Spring Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3-6 during the week of March 4th.

Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed.

The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. More information is available about the SEL Screener by accessing this link:

https://www.fcps.edu/student-tests-and-assessments/student-assessment-details/social-emotional-screener

If you have any questions, please reach out to our SEL Lead, Sandi Yost, at 703-644-4735.

Parents/Guardians,

This week, you received a letter about your student's attendance.  The purpose of the letter is to bring to the family's attention how many absences their student had up until February 6 and to emphasize the critical importance of regular school attendance for your child's success and well-being. While occasional absences are understandable, missing too many school days can have significant negative consequences that extend far beyond missed assignments.

Learning goes beyond digital textbooks and worksheets. The school fosters crucial social development through interaction with peers and teachers. Regular attendance allows students to build strong relationships, participate in discussions, and gain confidence in expressing themselves. These interactions shape their ability to collaborate, communicate effectively, and become well-rounded individuals.

Missing school translates to missed lessons, important instructions, and valuable classroom time. Catching up can be challenging, leading to academic struggles, frustration, and falling behind. Consistent attendance ensures students progress with the curriculum, build upon previous learning, and master essential skills at the appropriate pace.

Attending school daily instills positive habits of punctuality, commitment, and self-discipline. These skills are crucial for future success in college, careers, and personal life. By prioritizing school attendance, you empower your child to develop a strong work ethic and understand the importance of personal responsibility.

Feeling connected to their school community is essential for students' emotional well-being. Regular attendance fosters a sense of belonging, reduces isolation, and allows them to access social and emotional support systems within the school environment.

We understand that unforeseen circumstances may necessitate absences. However, we encourage you to work with us to minimize missed days. Please communicate any known absences in advance and promptly inform us of the reason for any unexpected absences. We're here to support you in finding solutions and ensuring your child has the best possible learning experience.

Together, we can work towards a culture of regular attendance where all students thrive and reach their full potential. Thank you for your partnership in prioritizing your child's education and well-being.

Sincerely,

Linda Peace

Want to know if your child's bus is on schedule or where the bus is? Here Comes the Bus® is an easy-to-use website and app that enables parents to see the location of their child’s school bus — almost in real time — on a smartphone, tablet, or personal computer.

Parents can track multiple buses if their children don’t all ride the same bus; know exactly when children arrive at school or the bus stop; and receive customized text and/or email notifications about bus locations, schedule changes, or delays.

To get started, download the app from the Apple iOS or Android app store. Check out the Here Comes the Bus and Frequently Asked Questions webpages for more information.
